East Haven Courier Halloween forecast card: clear and dry, 52 degrees at 6 p.m., low 40s by 9 p.m., frost late

Good news for East Haven trick-or-treaters: Halloween night looks clear, dry and cool, with no rain in the forecast. The one thing to plan for is how quickly it gets cold once the sun goes down.

The National Weather Service forecast for East Haven, updated early this morning, calls for a sunny afternoon with temperatures in the mid-50s and a light northwest wind. The chance of rain is zero through the evening.

Hour by hour tonight

  • 4 p.m.: about 56 degrees and sunny
  • 5 p.m.: about 55 degrees
  • 6 p.m.: about 52 degrees, mostly clear
  • 7 p.m.: about 48 degrees
  • 8 p.m.: about 43 degrees
  • 9 p.m.: about 41 degrees, with the wind nearly calm

Sunset in East Haven is at 5:48 p.m., according to the U.S. Naval Observatory, and it will be fully dark by about 6:16 p.m. The moon does not rise until about 10:52 p.m., so the streets will be darker than usual during prime trick-or-treat hours. Flashlights, glow sticks and reflective tape on costumes will go a long way, and drivers should take it slow on neighborhood streets.

Bundle up for the late crowd

Temperatures drop about 15 degrees between late afternoon and 9 p.m., so a costume that works at 5 o’clock may feel thin by 8. Overnight, the forecast calls for a low around 34 with areas of frost after 1 a.m. Sunday, so bring in any pumpkins or potted mums you want to keep looking good.

No weather alerts were in effect for East Haven as of this morning. Sunday looks sunny again, with a high near 61.

Don’t forget: clocks fall back tonight

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. Set clocks back one hour before bed, and enjoy the extra hour of sleep after a late night of candy sorting. Our fall-back guide has a reminder to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms while you’re at it.
