Sugar Bakery: Cupcake Wars champions still sweetening Main Street

Sugar Bakery on Main Street grew from Carol Vollono and Brenda DePonte’s home kitchen to a Cupcake Wars winner. Here is the family story and what to order.

On Main Street in East Haven, the glass cases at Sugar Bakery still read like a dessert dare: dozens of cupcake flavors, signature cakes, macarons, cookies and chocolate. The shop that Carol Vollono and her daughter Brenda DePonte built from a home kitchen is now past the 20-year mark — and still family-run.

The bakery’s own bio page calls the story “Sprinkled with Love.” It is the best primary source for how Sugar got from Carol’s house to four storefronts on Main Street, and for who rings you up today.

From a licensed home kitchen to Main Street

According to Sugar’s bio, Carol and Brenda founded the bakery in 2004 as a state-licensed home operation, baking desserts for restaurants across New Haven County. Brenda’s aunt, father, grandparents, sisters and cousins all pitched in. Demand outgrew the house, and they opened a 900-square-foot storefront on Main Street.

In 2008 they leaned into cupcakes — starting with 12 daily flavors, then 24 within a year, the bio says. NBC Connecticut coverage after their Food Network win put the same origin story on the record: Carol started baking at 8 with her mother, and the shop was working from family recipes, not pastry school.

Cupcake Wars and a Main Street expansion

In 2010, Sugar competed on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars in California and won, taking a $10,000 prize, the bakery’s bio and contemporary news coverage agree. Brenda told NBC they were handed Christmas and Thanksgiving ingredients in the first round and built a sweet-potato cupcake with an apple-cider reduction. Carol said she was not nervous because it felt like working in their own bakery.

The Food Network restaurant page still lists Sugar Cupcakery & Bakery at 422-424 Main St. and notes that Carol and Brenda kept dozens of flavors available daily. After the win, Sugar’s bio says the Main Street footprint grew to four storefronts.

Carol’s legacy, Brenda and Michael’s kitchen

Carol died in 2025. The bakery’s bio says Brenda and her husband, Michael, have carried the shop forward. Call and Aunt Denise may answer. Stop by and Brenda’s dad, Joe, might be at the register. Michael handles production questions; Charles, the marketing director for more than a decade, runs the social feed. “With family at its core,” the bio says, they intend to keep Carol’s “love and laughter” in every swirl of frosting.

Today the bio lists 36 daily cupcake flavors plus seasonal specials, a cake menu that includes Cannoli Cake and Nutella and Raspberry Pistachio creations, house-made chocolate, French macarons and butter cookies. CTvisit‘s listing — which uses the bakery’s contact email — puts walk-in selection around 40 flavors and notes a Cupcake Truck that appears around town; follow Sugar’s Facebook and Instagram for truck stops.

What locals say

Google reviews shared on public review sites keep landing on the same words: creative flavors, moist cake, friendly staff.

“These are the best cupcakes around,” wrote Tiffany. “They have so many fun and creative flavors and the cake is always moist and delicious. The Toasted Almond and the Cannoli are our favorite staple flavors.”

Nina said she comes every year for her fall birthday and always finds “new, delicious flavors.” Carla wrote that she has been going “before they were even on the food network in Cupcake Wars” and still recommends the place. Jennifer ordered a custom cake and called the process “no fuss” and the result “absolutely delicious.”

Geoffrey praised gift-ready extras — candles and cards — and said the staff “never disappoint in their product.” Tori liked the rotating monthly flavors and the Facebook and Instagram photos that preview what is in the case.

Custom cakes, dietary notes and the case

The online shop separates cupcakes, cakes, gift packs and more. Sugar’s homepage return policy notes that dairy-free and gluten-free items are made with the matching ingredients — but the bakery is not a dedicated gluten-free or vegan facility, so cross-contact is possible. That candor matters for allergy planning; call ahead for custom orders.

Looking in the display case is half the visit. Tiffany said so in her Google review, and the bakery’s own photography backs it up: seasonal specials rotate onto bright colored backdrops, while staples like Simply Vanilla, Chocolate Fudge and Black Bottom stay in the regular rotation.

Cannoli

NBC’s Cupcake Wars coverage already called the cannoli cupcake a loyal-customer favorite. The bakery still sells a cannoli-style cupcake with a cream center and chocolate chips — and a full Cannoli Cake on the cake menu.

Toasted Almond

Tiffany’s Google review names Toasted Almond as a staple next to Cannoli. The bakery’s product photo shows a golden mound of toasted topping over a light sponge.

Apple Cider

A seasonal flavor the bakery photographs for fall — cider-spiced cake, pale frosting and a small cookie garnish. It is the kind of rotating special Nina said keeps birthday visits interesting.
